AN AVID Global Table reader from Spain, Julio Carlos Perez Sanchez, was so excited about our Sarmie Challenge that, even though he couldn’t enter the Challenge (being based in Spain), he decided to challenge professional chef John Burger, of Flava, to a virtual sarmie showdown instead.
After Spain’s soccer World Cup triumph, Julio seemed ready to take on the world on any terrain, including sarmie making, and so he dared John to better his toasted three-cheese ciabatta sandwich.
John couldn’t resist his Spanish rival’s challenge and brought out the big guns by creating a monster of a sarmie in the form of a wholewheat cheesy steak stack. John also had another ace up his sleeve – he asked professional photographer Salvelio Meyer to photograph his creation. On hearing this Julio became a bit nervous as he had snapped his sarmie using his iphone.
But… at the end of the day it’s not about the photograph but about the sarmie… so you can follow John and Julio’s lead by sending us your own sarmie pics and telling us how you made them… plus you can win a R500 dinner for two from Flava in the process!

The recipes for Julio’s and John’s sarmies will be posted on The Global Table during the coming week.
So get your own sarmie made and remember, yours can be as elaborate or as simple as you like it best – and you can simply snap it with your cellphone too like Julio did, if you don’t have a snazzy camera to use.
